NSF: 2023 Major Research Instrumentation (MRI)
The Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) is pleased to announce this limited submission funding opportunity/award. Limited submission programs allow only a select number of applicants from each institution. In order to determine which PIs will be selected as the official applicants from UConn/UConn Health, an OVPR internal competition may be necessary (full process is described at our website).

Eligibility: The MRI Program especially seeks broad representation of PIs in its award portfolio, including women, underrepresented minorities, and persons with disabilities. Since demographic diversity may be greater among early-career researchers the MRI program also encourages proposals with early-career PIs and proposals that benefit early-career researchers.
Award Details: MRI Awards are categorized into Track 1 ($100K-$1M) and Track 2 ($1M-$4M). Awards with both categories can be for acquisition or development projects
Number of UConn Applicants: 3 from Storrs/Regional Campuses, 3 from UConn Health (For each campus, no more than 2 submissions of Track 1 proposals, no more than 1 submission of Track 2 Proposals. Limit includes both proposals where UConn/UConn Health is the lead institution or a significantly funded sub awardee.

Additional information: Cost sharing of precisely 30% of the total project cost is required for Ph.D.-granting institutions of higher education and for non-degree-granting organizations. If a full internal competition is necessary, pre-proposals should be submitted that include: 1) a cover page which includes the PI’s name, title, and contact information, proposal title, and proposal type (Acquisition or Development, Track 1 or Track 2); 2) a project plan no longer than 3 pages outlining information the project. Include information about the instrument, the research activities enabled by the instrument, and management plans. See NSF guidelines regarding project description subsections for guidance; 3) A brief budget w/justification. NSF MRI requires a 30% cost share by the institution. Please include a draft plan for how this institutional cost share could be achieved. If you have already received cost share commitments, please include pro-forma letters of support; 4) CV/Biosketches for key personnel.

Additional information: All NOI submitters must also submit a concept paper by the deadline above. We strongly encourage applicants to read about the foundation’s funding priorities and to review the OVPR’s funder analysis report before submitting. We also recommend that applicants append to their 1-page concept paper excerpts from NSF/NIH panel reviews indicating that the proposed project is unconventional / high-risk, and that federal funding is highly unlikely. This will be the only call for concept papers for the 2022-2023 academic year.
